My Sunday Photo – graffiti tunnel

I have been intrigued by Leake Street tunnel for some time now. I knew it existed and roughly where it was but could never quite work out exactly where.  This week I had to find it as I was going to a show that was part of VAULT Festival (you can see the Vaults and its queue up ahead). It’s hidden off Lower Marsh and runs underneath Waterloo Station. Graffiti is tolerated there, and since Network Rail took over ownership of the road from Eurostar in 2008 (when the Eurostar terminal moved to St Pancras) it is no longer used by cars.  Banksy organised the CANS Festival there in 2008, when the first walls were painted as a tunnel-long exhibition, and ever since then it has been constantly refreshed and re-painted by artists, the aroma of aerosol cans thick in the air.
